Online Bank Verification FAQs

Troubleshooting RBC Bank Connection via Plaid

We use two main data providers to connect financial institutions to Paramount Commerce's Online Bank Verification: Plaid and Flinks.

Plaid

Users attempting to link their RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) account to Paramount Commerce's Online Bank Verification may see an error message indicating that their account settings are incompatible. The error message 'Your account settings are incompatible' generally points to configurations on the RBC account that interfere with the connection process via Plaid. We rely on Plaid to establish connections with banks. Plaid is a trusted open finance platform by Canadian banks and is certified in internationally recognized security standards, such as ISO 27001, ISO 27701, and is SSAE18 SOC2 compliant.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) refers to a login security measure that prompts users to verify their identity in addition to using a username and password. Plaid generally supports the use of MFA, but certain types of MFA are not supported. Different banks implement MFA in different ways. When a user's bank uses an unsupported method of MFA, Plaid will not be able to establish a connection. Unsupported MFA types are rare, and Plaid is continually working to support all possible MFA types. The most commonly supported method for MFA is the One-Time Password sent to a users device via SMS.

Advice to your users

To resolve the issue, you can advise your users to temporarily modify the MFA settings on their RBC banking accounts. Once the MFA method is changed, they can attempt to connect their accounts again. See more details here.

Future Enhancements

Plaid plans to develop an update to support connections with MFA enabled. However, there is no exact timeline for this enhancement yet.

Flinks

Users attempting to link their RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) account to Paramount Commerce's Online Bank Verification may see an error message indicating that their account can't be connected. Flinks is a trusted open finance platform by Canadian banks and is SSAE18 SOC2 compliant.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) refers to a login security measure that prompts users to verify their identity in addition to using a username and password. Flinks generally supports the use of MFA, but Flinks does not support some types of MFA RBC uses. As a workaround, and due to an agreement between Flinks and RBC, RBC users with MFA are able to connect via Flinks if they have security questions and answers on their account.
